![]() Safety programs such as those increasing seatbelt use and reducing impaired driving have substantially lowered the traffic fatalities over the years. Over the past 40 years, there has been a general downward trend in traffic fatalities. Fatalities decreased from 2017 to 2018 in almost all segments of the population, with the exception of crashes involving large truck occupants, bicyclists and pedestrians. An estimated 2,710,000 people were injured in police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes. There has been a yearly decrease in the number of deaths on our nation’s highways since 2016. roadways during 2018, a 2.4-percent decrease from 37,113 people killed in 2017. The updated final counts for 2018 will be reflected with the release of the 2019 Annual Report File.Īccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Summary of Motor Vehicles Crashes, there were 36,560 people killed in motor vehicle crashes on U.S. The additional time between the Annual Report File and the Final file provides for submission of important variable data requiring outside sources, which may lead to changes in final counts. The current version of the 2018 FARS data file is referred to as the Annual Report File (ARF). Although the 2018 date file is a full year’s worth of data, it is subject to change when it is finalized. ![]() Note that 2017 and earlier year FARS data are final and generally not subject to change. ![]() This data is compiled into the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). Categories of data collected include pre-collision action, time of day, age groups and gender of persons injured/killed. Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) collects data from motor vehicle crashes where injuries were sustained and death occurred. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration studies vehicle safety and driving behavior with the goal to reduce vehicle crashes. ![]()
